Floating

Teresa parked in her driveway and turned the engine off. The front yard was muted in fall colors, anticipating the coming winter. The evergreen creeper her mother had planted on her tenth birthday had crawled along the front of the house, claiming an increasing amount space over the years. The windows were dark. Gabe wasn’t at home like she’d hoped.

She was a little disappointed, having hoped that she wouldn’t have to spend the evening alone.

Not alone, she consoled herself. Not really; but without a family, I feel so unanchored, like I’m drifting.

Leaving her bag in the car, she stepped out into the crisp early evening. The sun was still an hour away from setting but the house blocked the light. She walked in the grey light to the back of the house, too pumped by her research to go inside.

The back patio extended to a garden divided in half by a stone path. At one end was an overrun vegetable patch, and at the other were the remains of neat flower beds. They hadn’t had much attention and the gravel path was encroached by overgrown grass. Beyond the path was the gently sloping curve that led down to the river.

The thundering rushing of a spring river had calmed down to the placid waters of autumn, much like Teresa’s life. She walked down to the bank, inhaling the sweet, slightly metallic air and letting the wind caress her face and snatch her thoughts away.

A faint light winked from around the corner of her eye.

She saw a small candle bob on the sluggish surface as it made its way down the stream toward her dock.

It was followed by another.

And then another.

Like fallen flowers in spring, the river was awash with a hundred twinkling lights.

The whole dark lake was blanketed with blinking candles in the fast-falling dusk, mirroring the stars appearing in the sky.

Teresa’s breath had stopped somewhere in the region of her chest. She blinked at the beautiful sight that could only be described as heavenly. No sooner had she thought of that word when the candle-lit lake parted to make room for a small canoe.

The canoe was festooned with flower garlands and fairy lights. In the middle stood a tall, well-built man. His hair shone darker in the fading light but Teresa knew it to be golden yellow. She couldn’t see his eyes but his wide smile was beaming at her across the distance.

Gabe had arrived.

“Ferry you across the river, ma’am?” he asked, maneuvering the canoe to the bank where she stood.

The small craft didn’t wobble or threaten to capsize as Gabe stood in it tall and handsome, his handsome face glowing in the soft candlelight. It remained perfectly still even as Teresa jumped in.

“You can take me anywhere you want to.” Teresa leaned up on her toes to kiss him. He smelled of sunshine, green grass, and parched earth after the first kiss of rain. She never wanted to let him go.

The canoe slid away from the bank, the candles trailing away and around them to accommodate their passage.
